Intelligent systems combine artificial intelligence (AI) with robotic technology in order to allow machines to perform complicated tasks without human involvement, for example in such state-of-the-art applications as unmanned autonomous vehicles. The control system used in many of these applications is based on the principles and architectures developed by Jim Albus and Alex Meystel. This book is a timely introduction to a rapidly emerging field. It presents the fundamentals of the theory of intelligent systems and multiple applications of it, including Dune-Buggy and Baby-Robot developed at Drexel University, and Robo-Crane and Unmanned Army Vehicle developed at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. This book will influence research and development in this area for years to come.
