Hardening Linux

Learn how to quickly secure your Linux hosts and application against attack

James Turnbull - Collection The Expert's Voice in Open Source

552 pages, parution le 02/03/2005

Résumé

Linux is becoming a popular platform for applications and database servers. An increasing number of Linux-based hosts are being deployed to provide cost-effective and efficient Internet-facing services such as e-mail and DNS. As a result of their expanded and often critical role in organizations, Linux hosts have become more frequent targets for attack.

In Hardening Linux, I identify many of the risks of running Linux hosts and applications, and I provide you with practical examples and methods to minimize those risks. By the end of the book, you'll have the methodologies, resources, and tools to ensure you're able to maintain that security against new attackers and new threats. I've written this book for Linux/Unix administrators who don't necessarily have an in-depth knowledge of security but need to know how to secure their hosts.

You'll learn how to secure the base operating system and firewall with iptables, secure connections to your hosts, secure your file systems and files, monitor logs, and test your security. I'll also show you how to secure e-mail servers, including antispam and antivirus techniques; build secure IMAP and POP servers; secure FTP servers; and run a secure DNS server using BIND. Finally, I've provided a list of additional resources at the end of each chapter that will further expand your knowledge of Linux security.

You can read the chapters in this book in any order. For quick reference, Appendix C summarizes the key points from each chapter.
