Debugging ASP

Troubleshooting for Programmers

Résumé

When Osbome/McGraw-Hill first approached me with the idea for this book, I was a little skeptical. After all, I reasoned, Active Server Pages represented one of the simplest means available for quickly creating powerful Web applications. How much could possibly be said about debugging in such an easy development environment? I returned to my daily work, programming ASP scripts for InterAccess, a large regional Internet service provider (ISP). But, from this point forward, I was on the lookout. Every time a bug was encountered, it went on "the list." At the end of a few weeks of regular development, I was completely convinced-a book on ASP debugging wasn't just needed, it was desperately required!

As experienced developers, we all too often become so accustomed to the eccentricities and short-comings of our chosen tools that we forget how completely arbitrary and illogical they can seem to unfamiliar audiences. In this book, it has been my goal and desire to pinpoint as many of these potential stumbling blocks as possible. In this way, a developer new to Active Server Pages, regardless of his or her level of experience with other development tools, can use this book to spare themselves the hours and days of agony spent by those of us who have gone before. This book begins by explaining some of the basic tips and tricks associated with successful debugging and configuring a machine specifically for ASP development, as opposed to a production Web server. The bulk of the rest of the book is then spent examining each facet of ASP development in turn, laying bare the nuances and peculiarities that typically cause developers frustration when working with these technologies.

The appendixes provide additional data that you might find useful in crafting your Active Server Pages. Of particular interest is Appendix C, in which I give as concise and complete an overview of Microsoft's forthcoming ASP+ technology as was possible at the time of this writing. ASP+ represents an enormous advance over current Active Server Pages, and I would highly recommend that you embrace and utilize this new technology sooner rather than later.
