Concurrent Systems

An Integrated approach to Operating Systems, Distributed Systems and Databases

Jean Bacon

726 pages, parution le 26/11/2002 (3eme édition)

Résumé

The Open University (OU) have used Concurrent Systems for their course 'Software Systems and their Development' (M301) since 1999. This third edition has been written in collaboration with Robin Laney, Pete Thomas and Janet van der Linden who, with others, developed and taught the OU course. The changes to the second edition arc as follows:

  • Java is used throughout to illustrate object orientation concepts, concurrent algorithms and distributed programming.
  • An operating systems architectural perspective remains, to keep trie strong system design focus, but there is less detail on operating system functions and specific operating systems.
  • There is a new chapter on security which complements the coverage uf distributed systems.
  • The case studies in Part IV include a new chapter on web programming and a rewrite of 'Middleware'. The UNIX, NT and Microkernel case studies have been replaced by short case study sections on those systems in earlier chapters.
The philosophy and approach remain unchanged.
The aim of this book is to equip students with an integrated view of modern software systems. Concurrency and modularity are the unifying themes. It takes a systems approach rather than a programming language approach, since concurrent programming is firmly rooted in system design. The language is an implementation tool for the system designer and programming languages are covered throughout the book from this perspective.
The formal theory of concurrency is not included. Rather, the aim is to provide a systems background to which subsequent formal study can relate. Without prior study of real systems a student can have little intuition about the basis of formal models of concurrent systems. For students about to work on the theory of concurrency the book provides a summary of essential system fundamentals.
