Who is this book for?

This book is for anyone who knows C++ and wants to learn Windows programming using MFC and Visual C++ 5. Use your existing C++ knowledge to start developing practical Windows programming skills using the most powerful tools available. Beginning MFC Programming is designed to teach you how to use MFC to write useful programs as quickly and as easily as possible using Microsoft's Visual C++ compiler. This is the tutorial for you, if:

  • You've done some programming before, and you understand C++. Now you want to move past writing simple text mode applications and start developing practical Windows programming skills using the most powerful tools available.
  • You've developed simple Windows applications using C++ and the Windows SDK, but you've had enough of doing things the hard way. You know that it's time to get to grips with the industry standard Windows class library to increase your programming productivity.
  • You've created C++ programs using other class libraries (perhaps even on non-Windows operating systems). This book will give you the solid MFC foundation you're looking for, but will move along fast enough to keep you excited.

In other words, if you know C++ and you're keen to learn MFC, this is the book for you.

This book isn't suitable if you're new to programming or don't already know C++. If that describes you then you should definitely check out Beginning Visual C++ 5, which features all the great coverage of MFC that's contained in this book plus an extensive C++ tutorial that provides the necessary grounding in the C++ language that you'll need to get the most out of MFC.

L'auteur - Ivor Horton

Ivor Horton started out as a mathematician, but shortly after graduating, he was lured into messing about with computers by a well-known manufacturer. He has spent many happy years programming occasionally useful applications in a variety of languages as well as teaching mainly scientists and engineers to do likewise. He has extensive experience in applying computers to problems in engineering design and to manufacturing operations in a wide range of industries. He is the author of a number of tutorial books on programming in C, C++, and Java. When not writing programming books or providing advice to others, he leads a life of leisure.
