Most client/server systems are currently 2-tier. A 3-tier client/server system brings in another layer, which might be a large customer database or the Web, and it is this extra level of data accessibility which has made 3-tier such a hot topic This text describes 3-tier client/server systems, using case studies from well known international companies. It invites IT managers and developers to take a peek inside ten companies' 3-Tier projects to discover different ways to approach their own problems. The case studies range from one of the largest in the world - the UK Employment Service, and links more than 20,000 centres to the AT&T system for their Consumer and Small Business Division that provides online information to over 2,000 operators and cuts the fulfillment time for ordering telephone services by 30%. Each chapter contains advice from the chief architects of the project along with their planned future developments.
