The Stem Cell Divide

The Facts, the Fiction, and the Fear Driving the Greatest Scientific, Political, and Religious Debate of Our Time

Michael Bellomo

262 pages, parution le 01/08/2006

Résumé

The debate about the merits, dangers, and nature of stem cell research rages on. Some see in it the answer to every debilitating disease known to man, while others see it as a sinister gateway to human cloning.

Several states have approved funding packages for stem cell initiatives, enabling more research while further inflaming passions on all sides. As politics, religion, and the media weigh in on this complex issue, more and more of the scientific reality of stem cell research is getting lost.

With The Stem Cell Divide, Michael Bellomo debunks the distortions and exaggerations that come from every camp. In the search for the truth about stem cell science, he has interviewed many of the scientists whose cutting-edge research is at the very heart of this divisive issue. The book lays out what research has (and hasn't) accomplished so far, what current initiatives are focused on, and what may be coming in the near and distant future.

With engaging and accessible style, the book covers the discovery of cell regeneration, what makes stem cells different from the billions of other cells that make up every living thing, why cloning has (for better or for worse) hit a scientific "brick wall," and why the topic of stem cell research is already at the top of every politician's agenda- even though to date not one single person has been helped or harmed by embryonic stem-cell based treatment.

Rather than telling readers what to think, the book presents the facts necessary to form their own opinions about one of the most controversial (and potentially life-changing) developments in history.
