Project Management

The Managerial Process

Clifford Gray, Erik Larson

496 pages, parution le 01/04/2000

Résumé

For years project management was the exclusive province of engineering schools. Considered a highly specialized area of study, project management was viewed as a highly technical subject with applications to a few select industries such as aerospace and construction.

Recently things have changed. Project management now has wider applications throughout a wide range of businesses and industries. Today successful project managers are defined not only by their skill in dealing with issues of planning, scheduling, and budgeting. The ability to manage people is a critical part of their profile as well.

Clifford Gray and Erik Larson, both of Oregon State University, are aware of these changes and have addressed them in Project Management: The Managerial Process. Drawing on different but complementary backgrounds (Dr. Gray holds a Ph.D in operations management; Dr. Larson's Ph.D is in organizational behaviour), this highly qualified author team provides the student of project management with the "complete" picture. Technical issues of project management are thoroughly addressed, but unlike other books on the subject, such issues are balanced and provided a context by a comprehensive discussion of the human elements requiring consideration in the management of projects.

Equally distinctive is the wide range of industries covered by the authors, who show how the principles of project management can be applied far more widely than was formerly assumed. The process of project management-not only "what to do" and "how to do it," but why it is done - is discussed as well. Case studies, "Snapshot from Practice" boxes, and a pedagogically rich CD ROM, including Microsoft Project, is available with the book.
