Résumé

In designing commercial interiors, America relies on its vast and composite architectural repertoire, which is characterized by its carefully calibrated compositions and images. the result is a harmonized blend of images that continues to be an obligatory reference point. this book compares twenty-nine projects of stores, all created in the United-States from the beginnig of the '90s to the present. Especially selected to reflect new trends in commercial architecture as well as the more traditionnal styles, the projects aim to attract a wider audience. They include architectural transformationsof former SoHo art galleries into new and exclusive boutique, but these projects have also involved expansions, producing huge stores, such as the Virgin Megastore in Time square. Aside from being valuable functional creations, these projects reflect an artistic endeavor, their design often comparable to an art gallery or small museum. Flanked by linear "museum-like" exemples, the more "theatrical" projects have been designed to integrate with the merchandise's characteristics. In these cases, a variety of architectural solutions were used to provide expression, framing and embellishing the products on display. For the most part, the interiors of the projects selected for this volume are unique and completely new design combinations, offering a stimulating and varied presentation of commercial architecture made in the USA. This volume, therefore, enrichies the wealth of information provided by this series. Paul Warchol, New Yorker of international acclaim, has professionally photographed each project. As well, detailed information and copies of the original designs guide the reader in understanding the structura phases of each store. In addition, at the back of the book, there is biographical information on the designers and a detailed description of the materials.

L'auteur - Matteo Vercelloni

Architecte, Matteo Vercelloni collabore de façon permanente à différentes revues liées au monde de l'architecture et du design telles que Casa Vogue, Interni ou encore Costruire. Il enseigne également à l'école Polytechnique de Milan, à l'Institut Européen de Design de Milan et à l'académie de Beaux-Arts de Brera.
