Résumé

The first edition of the Dictionary of Architecture and Construction, published in 1975, included more definitions of terms in architecture and construction than any other dictionary of its kind. Because of the accuracy and clarity of these definitions, it has been accepted as the authority on architectural terminology, not only by general and professional users, but in many courts of law throughout the world. A greatly expanded second edition was published in 1993. Now extensively revised, updated, and further expanded to include a total of approximately 24,500 definitions and over 200 additional illustrations, this comprehensive third edition brings users the broadest possible coverage of the language of architecture and construction.

The publication of the third edition represents the culmination of 33 years of work by the Editor. No individual, or even a small group, can bring expert knowledge to all of the widely diverse specialties that are now associated with architecture and building construction. In the preparation of this edition, detailed coverage of terms has been made possible by building on the work of standards groups and technical committees of professional societies and trade associations, whose valuable assistance is recognized in the Acknowledgments. As was noted in the first edition of this Dictionary, the following individuals, each of them specialists in their own field, provided the necessary expertise required for a comprehensive and authoritative work: Walter E Aikman; William H. Bauer; Bronson Binger, A.I.A.; Donald Edward Brotherson, A.I.A.; Robert Burns, A.I.A.; A. E. Bye, FA.S.L.A.; Richard K. Cook, Ph.D.; William C. Crager, C.S.P.; Frank L. Ehasz, Ph.D., RE.; Francis Ferguson, A.I.A., A.I.R; Frederick G. Frost, EA.I.A.; Alfred Greenberg, RE.; John Hagrnan; Michael M. Harris, RA.I.A.; R. Bruce Hoadley, D.For.; Jerome S. B. Iffland, RE.; George C. Izenour, A.I.E.E.E.; Curtis A. Johnson, M.Sc., RE.; Edgar Kaufmann, Jr., H.A.I.A.; Thomas C. Kavanaugh, Sc.D.; Robert L. Mascolino, R.A.; Donald E. Orner, RE.; John Barratt Patton, Ph.D.; Albert J. Rosenthal, L.L.B.; Henry H. Rothman, REC.S.; James V. Ryan, M.S.; John E. Ryan, RE., S.ERE.; Reuben Samuels, RE., EA.S.C.E.; joseph Schein, A.I.A.; joseph M. Shelley, B.S.Arch.; Kenneth Alexander Smith, A.I.A., RE.; Perry M. Smith, RE., Fred G. Snook, M.S.; Carl A.Swanson, B.C.E., C.S.I.; Kenneth Thomas, M.Sc., C.Eng.; Charles W. Thurston, Ph.D., RE.; Marvin Trachtenberg, Ph.D.; Everard M. Upjohn, M.Arch.; Oliver B. Volk; Byron 0. Wels. This group of experts, who came from widely diverse backgrounds, included practicing architects, professional. engineers, architectural historians, art historians, professors of architecture, specification writers, craftsmen, contractors, safety experts, and a legal scholar. To all of them, I owe a continuing debt of gratitude. In addition, special thanks go to a colleague for many years in the Graduate School of Architecture of Columbia University, Professor Adolf K. Placzek, Avery Librarian Emeritus, for his helpfulness, scholarship and insights.

L'auteur - Andy Harris

Andy Harris earned a degree in Special Education from Indiana University/Purdue University-Indianapolis (IUPUI). He taught young adults with severe disabilities for several years. He also taught himself enough computer programming to support his teaching habit with freelance programming.
Those were the exciting days when computers started to have hard drives, and some computers connected to each other with arcane protocols. He taught programming in those days because it was fun. Eventually, Andy decided to teach computer science full time, and he still teaches at IUPUI. He lectures in the applied computing program and runs the streaming media lab. He also teaches classes in whatever programming language is in demand at the time. He has developed a large number of online video-based courses and international distance education projects.
Andy has written several books on various computing topics and languages including Java, C#, mobile computing, JavaScript, and PHP/MySQL.
Andy welcomes comments and suggestions about his books. He can be reached at aharris@cs.iupui.edu.
