En 1946, 1947, 1948 et 1950, elle est élue « best female vocalist with a big band » par Down Beat. Son premier album solo, Something Cool (1953-1955), dirigé et arrangé par Pete Rugolo est un classique du jazz cool et un chef d'oeuvre de sensualité.
