The Real and the True
The Digital Photography of Pedro Myer
Pedro Meyer - Collection Voices that matter
Résumé
Pedro Meyer is a documentary photographer who, while he's done acclaimed work in what might be termed conventional photojournalism, uses a computer to manipulate his photographs. He does this to capture the truth. "The experience in a traditional photographic representation has been limited to those elements that the lens was able to capture. To the silver halides or dyes, I now can add my own memory," Meyer says.
Meyer's defense of his working methods, and his assertion that his images remain documentary in nature even after they've been digitally modified, have, for more than a decade, put him at the heart of a fascinating controversy: What is the difference, if any, between what's real and what's true? Many say that any manipulation of a documentary photograph creates a falsehood, but Meyer contends this isn't so. A picture can be made truer, he believes.
This fascinating book, which features more than 200 exguisite photographs-both black-and-white and color-looks at Meyer's ideas and his work from a variety of perspectives. The Real and the True promises a rich reading and viewing experience to anyone intrigued by the intellectual questions raised by this controversial artist and thinker, whose photography brilliantly combines journalism and art.
