Does designing a book follow a logical and well-thought-out process? Swiss graphic designer and typographer Jost Hochuli studies the crucial role played by instinct throughout the various stages of planning a book, from selecting a character type and size to determining the layout of the block of texts. Systematic Book Design? was written for a conference the author gave for the first time in Munich in 2007. Drawing on examples from five books he created, Jost Hochuli considers the questions which arose while they were being designed and the importance of intuition in rational thought. The text is illustrated by pictures of Jost Hochuli's work, and was first published in issue #4 of Back Cover magazine. Graphic designer John Morgan wrote a foreword to the present edition.

Jost Hochuli est un typographe et un graphiste suisse internationalement reconnu pour son travail de qualité et d'inventivité dans le domaine du design de livre.

Il a une grande expérience de l'enseignement notamment dans les écoles (de Zurich et de Saint-Gall, sa ville natale. On lui doit, en tant qu'auteur, L'Art du livre en Suisse (Pro Helvetia,1993), Designing Books (avec Robin Kinross, Hyphen Press, 1996) ainsi qu'une monographie, Jost Hochuli: Printed Matter, Mainly Books (Verlag Niggli, 2002), présentant la richesse et la diversité de son travail de designer et de typographe.
