L'image a l'epoque gothique (1140-1280)

Résumé
--
After 'L'Image à l'époque romane' (1999), Jean Wirth continues his study of the image in the Middle Ages with the age of the great cathedrals. At that time, the image took on a prestige it had never before enjoyed in the Western world, and never would again. This was due to a confidence in the visible, which we find in scientific thought as well as in the religious system. In the arts, there followed an intense search for likeness which resulted, around 1200, in a return to drawing from nature, abandoned at the end of Antiquity. Thanks to the polychromic works of the sculptor - of which few remain - the saints and other great figures take on a startling presence and powerful attraction. But in order to fully appreciate this outstanding period in art history, it is necessary to overcome a few prejudices, beginning with those of an aesthetic nature: the dichotomies between the idealisation and representation of nature, or between technical and artistic drawing. It was also necessary to abandon all attempts at explaining medieval religion and its production by the gullibility of an oppressed and wretched people. Lastly, it was necessary to overcome ignorance of the medieval religious system, maintained by its heirs as well as its critics. We instinctively associate religion with moralism and we find it difficult to imagine the place religion accorded to scientific and aesthetic questions in the 13th century, at a time when the greatest scholars could potentially become pope. Nor can we conceive of the change of perspective that took place in the system in favour of a sort of mother-goddess, the spouse of God who would only reign at the end of time. We were not often taught that the greatest theologians demanded the adoration of the body of Christ and his image of latria, and even less often that they saw in the resurrection of the flesh a means to enjoy the beatific vision to the full, so sacralizing the most noble pleasure of the senses.
