Classical Greek Architecture is a definitive account of classical architecture, its influences, and its significance for the structures of today from leading scholar Alexander Tzonis. The work contains a wealth of contemporary and vintage photographs from major archives that, together with numerous line drawings of the monuments and sites of Ancient Greece, provide a breathtaking introduction to visual thinking and architectural culture.

Emerging out of a unique period of synergy in the Mediterranean, Classical Greek architecture established, through a vigorous multicultural synthesis, a new way of construing and constructing space that is still in practice today. This new approach enabled the modern, rational, and dynamic organization of buildings, cities, and landscapes. Even more significantly, it set up a precedent and the foundations for an ongoing spirit of creative experimentation in design and a vision of freedom.

L'auteur - Alexander Tzonis

Alexander Tzonis est professeur de théorie de l'architecture et directeur du Design Knowledge System à l'Université de Delft. Après des études à l'Université de Yale, il a été professeur à Harvard de 1967 à 1981 et professeur invité au Collège de France. Auteur de plus de deux cents articles, il a également publié de nombreux ouvrages, parmi lesquels on retiendra Towards a non-oppressive environment (MIT Press, 1972, traduit en six langues ; édition française, Vers un environnement non-oppressif, Liège, Mardaga, 1976), Classical Architecture (en collaboration avec Liane Lefaivre, MIT Press, 1986, traduit en six langues ; édition française, Le classicisme en architecture : la poétique de l'ordre, Paris, Dunod, 1985), Le Corbusier (Universe, 2001 ; édition française, Paris, Hazan, 2002). Lauréat de l'American Institute of Architects Award (1994), il s'est vu confier la direction scientifique de plusieurs colloques internationaux, avec entre autres The Mediterranean City (Jérusalem, 2002).
